This series contains forms summarizing the number of students on Sherman Institute campus, the number of students admitted to the hospital, those on the school farm, students participating in the outing program by living and working off campus, and individuals absent without leave. Generally the forms list the names of student who were off campus, including those authorized to attend special off-campus events. The forms also record the actions taken by school officials to locate students who were absent without leave. The bulletins sometimes include remarks on campus events, such as dances or church services.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
